My 365 Day Challenge

I have another blog I am now in the 13th day of posting, and the challenge for me is to take a new picture everyday and post it on this blog. It's called 365 Days of Christine. And I'm pretty excited about it, because it pushes me to create something everyday. So here's the link, come follow me on my adventure. :)

Struggling

I've been so conflicted lately about my work, my desires, my art. I feel like I'm in a constant struggle trying to find...something...hoping for an explanation about...something...but what? Part of the struggle is because I don't know. Is that a beautiful thing? Is that art? I think I'm chasing something, something I'm not quite sure what it is yet. But whatever it is, I hope it's a dream...

Saggy Boob Scarves

HAHA, where do I get mine?

Abandoned Lego House: Mike Doyle

Just found a fantastic abandoned house model created with Legos (one of my favorite toys when I was a kid). It was created by Mike Doyle and I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this sort of thing, what a great idea!

Photo Project: Assingment 1 Anti-Cliche

I'm already working on my second project now, but earlier this semester, for my intermediate photo class, our first assignment was to photograph things not normally seen, things that are anti-cliche. Everyone first presented what was seen as cliche today, such as: the myspace type profile picture we've all made, the large flowers with bees, family portraits, swirling staircases, sunsets, that sun glare everyone seems to include in their photos too, waterfalls, beaches and palm trees, tree lined walkways, etc etc. I've taken all these photos too I admit, much of my beginning works dealt with bees and flowers close-up. I was so fascinated with close-up and that I could be next to a bee and catch it on camera! I'll have to post those pics sometime. But it is fascinating because what we see as cliche now was not considered so at one point, also, what we see as new and inventive now, will at some point become cliche because everyone will be wanting to make those pictures.

Anyways, I started just going out and taking pictures at Disneyland, then inside my house. We have a giant (I'm sure almost every asian family has this) family portrait by our front door. I played around with this idea of blurring out the faces in the picture. You can still see the blurred silhouettes, but no detail, like that family portrait means nothing, it could be anybody's family, no one would know.

Another picture I used a cup and had my sister hold it against the kitchen light, it looks more like a graphic piece, I was just playing around with different things to create various effects in a picture. Note: these are scans from my negatives, not scans from the actual prints themselves.

My Sketches: My Dead Dahlias

So it started senior year of high school, in my AP studio art class, I was doodling in my sketchbook and started drawing a girl with a big head, crazy wavy hair, and a ridiculously long elegant neck. I kept it simple with focus on the big eyes and hair.
So I decided to develop the idea more, it has been coming along slowly and I more doodle the idea of a character here and there in random places, but I perhaps plan on making a series, I don't know yet if I want to paint them or leave them as sketches. I thought about the name of this series of twisted doll like shaped ladies, and am deciding to stick with the name Dead Dahlias. The last picture shown is the most recent one done beginning of this year, so enjoy or lemme know what you think :)

Ideas: Photo Project - Fabrications

For my second photo project this semester, I'm at a loss as what to do. We are supposed to in some way incorporate ourselves into the picture, not necessarily our physical self, but show that we've manipulated the subject somehow, not just a scene of nature for example. We could build or create something. Some ideas I have in mind are either too expensive, or are going to take up too much time that I don't have at the moment. Plus I feel I'm at an artist's block right now, which sucks. It also doesn't help that my mom is starting to complain again that I'm doing nothing with my life, but that's another topic.

I was in the halloween store with my sister yesterday and came across this raven mask. It was supposedly going to be in a movie, but got rejected. Well for some reason, I have a strange attachment and attraction to this mask, don't ask me why, it's weird and creepy and I love it. But it's a little out of my budget of broke-ness to get it for my photo assignment. So maybe that will be another project, maybe a series. Well, I guess time to go back to the sketchbook and brainstorm some more...

Journal: Quicksand

So I'm taking a poetry class this semester and my teacher suggested getting a small notebook to carry around. I recently got one for ideas, observations, pieces of writing that may be thought of during the day or whenever.

Here's a random thought and unedited writing from that little journal I now carry around:

Love is Quicksand

it happens all so fast and once it does, you're stuck and you keep sinking deeper and deeper. you get pulled out a little here and there only to sink faster than before. you keep sinking 'til you can't breathe anymore and become asphyxiated and at that point, no one can save you.

I'm almost to that point.

Photo Shoot: Scouting

I've had my eye on this little place that's relatively close to my house for quite some time. Today I actually decided to go out and check out the area for a photo shoot I want to do in the near future. Probably won't be until summer, but that's okay.

It looks like if I do a shoot here, it's going to have to be quick, and I hope my model is up for the task of hopping over fences because this place is not open for public use. I am a little concerned about the water, but we won't be dabbling too much or not at all in it. So when I've got more free time, I'll be planning the details. Fun fun :)

My Next Project, Ads, and Ideas

The current project I'm working on right now is called "Rebel Re-Label," it is basically where we take an ad or product, re-interpret it, and relabel it. In my thought, spitting back out our regurgitated ad and feeding it to the masses. I'm leaning toward doing Orbit Gum for some reason. In my research for the product, I've stumbled across some cool websites.

One of them is Coloribus, which is an advertisement archive. It's dangerous because I could spend hours looking through intriguing ads rather than working on my actual project. Yet it's cool seeing some of the creative things people do and put back into the world.

Another site I came across was SmartAssRadio (10 Worst Orbit Flavors), where they talked about the 500 (literally) different flavors of Orbit Gum. That was my humor for the day, hehe.

So I'm still in the process of coming up with a hopefully clever title and motto for the new Orbit and it's flavors.

Ideas: Future Project

When my professor mentioned that we would be doing a future project, my mind went to "water." Most people think of space, but I picture water. It would be incredible to create a livable community underwater. One of my first ideas for this project would follow a sort of reverse time line for macro evolution. First, fish turned into man, and in the "future," man would revert back into the water and well, not necessarily turn back into a fish but be able to live and sustain life underwater. I'm not thinking merfolk, that is another time, another story.

To be honest I am probably not going to complete this idea because of A) equipment, and B) time. But I enjoy underwater photography immensely and was consumed by looking at pictures for hours on end. I hope to pursue this sometime in the future of my life.

Anyways, my mom used to give me these Pop Photo magazines she bought and I remembered there was an article on Howard Schatz and his beautiful underwater photography. If people ever did live underwater, I envision they would look like the dancers in his photos: graceful, gentle, and flowing, always flowing.

Another artist I discovered on my search was Zena Holloway who has done underwater photography for many ads and also has lovely and inspiring photos.

If the World Was Made of Scotch Tape...

Nothing would really be fixed...and it'd be sticky.

I enjoy how artist Tara Donovan creates beautiful pieces using objects most of us would never even consider using for art. These bland, unnatural, man made pieces are put together so it looks natural and organic. I wonder if that's what the future will be like. There will be no such thing as nature; everything will be man made, and what people come to know as nature in the future is what people now know as paper plates and styrofoam cups. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. It might still be beautiful and pleasing, but distant and possibly unable to relate to even though man made it himself...
